Never just one to choose a single tone or milieu, Jarmusch followed his 1995 acid western “Useless Male” with this modestly budgeted but equally ambitious film about a lifeless male of a different kind; as tends to happen with contract killers — such since the 1 Alain Delon played in Jean-Pierre Melville’s instructive “Le Samouraï” — poor Ghost Dog soon finds himself being targeted with the same Gentlemen who keep his services. But Melville was hardly Jarmusch’s only source of inspiration for this fin de siècle

To anyone familiar with Shinji Ikami’s tortured psyche, however — his daddy issues and severe uncertainties of self-worth, not to mention the depressive anguish that compelled Shinji’s precise creator to revisit the kid’s ultimate choice — Anno’s “The End of Evangelion” is nothing less than a mind-scrambling, fourth-wall-demolishing, soul-on-the-screen meditation within the upside of suffering. It’s a self-portrait of the artist who’s convincing himself to stay alive, no matter how disgusted he might be with what that entails. 

More than anything, what defined the ten years was not just the invariable emergence of unique individual filmmakers, but also the arrival of artists who opened new doors to the endless possibilities of cinematic storytelling. Administrators like Claire Denis, Spike Lee, Wong Kar-wai, Jane Campion, Pedro Almodóvar, and Quentin Tarantino became superstars for reinventing cinema on their own conditions, while previously established giants like Stanley Kubrick and David Lynch dared to reinvent themselves while the entire world was watching. Many of these greats are still working today, plus the movies are each of the better for that.

With Tyler Durden, novelist Chuck Palahniuk invented an impossibly cool avatar who could bark truisms at us with a quasi-spiritual touch, like Zen Buddhist koans that have been deep-fried in Axe body spray. With Brad Pitt, David Fincher found the perfect specimen to make that person as real to audiences as he is to your story’s narrator — a superstar who could seduce us and make us resent him for it within the same time. In the masterfully directed movie that served as being a reckoning with the twentieth Century as we readied ourselves with the twenty first (and ended with a man reconciling his outdated demons just in time for some towers to implode under the burden of his new ones), Tyler became the physical embodiment of buyer masculinity: Aspirational, impossible, insufferable.

This drama explores the inner and outer lives of various LGBTQ characters dealing with repression, depression and hopelessness across centuries.

We will never be sure who’s who in this film, and whether the blood on their hands is real or perhaps a diabolical trick. That being said, one thing about “Lost Highway” is absolutely mother and son sex video fixed: This is definitely the Lynch movie that’s the most of its time. Not in a foul way, of course, though the film just screams

Ada is insular and self-contained, but Campion outfitted the film with some unique touches that allow Ada to give voice to her passions, care of the inventive voiceover that is presumed to come from her brain, instead than her indiansex mouth. While Ada suffers a number of profound setbacks after her arrival, mostly stemming from her husband’s refusal to house her beloved piano, her fortunes change when George promises to take it in, asking for lessons in return.

That’s not to state that “Fire Walk with Me” is interchangeable with the show. Jogging over two hours, the movie’s temper is way grimmer, scarier and — within an unsettling way — sexier than Lynch’s foray into broadcast television.
